Carolina Forest High School is offering their first ever American Sign Language (ASL) Club! American Sign Language is the natural language that is usually common in the United States deaf community. This new club gives students the opportunity to learn a new language that they can apply to real life situations!

Nicole Justice, an educational interpreter for the deaf who runs the club, says, “No experience is ever necessary; so if you missed the beginning classes it’s okay! As of right now, we have about 10-15 students. All are welcome, of course!”

The club was formed because students were eager to learn sign language, so that they could communicate with their deaf peers without the use of an interpreter. The American Sign Language Club meets in Mrs. Dutka’s Art Room every Friday during lunch. Students are able to learn the basic terms, such as letter and numbers, as well as the deaf culture.

“My hope is that they fall in love with the language, they learn how to communicate with each other in American Sign Language (ASL), they leave class with a better understanding of their deaf/hard of hearing peers, the history and culture of deafness, American Sign Language, and the role and responsibility of an educational interpreter. I would LOVE to see students continue their ASL journey and join the field of interpreting!” shares Justice.

If you’re interested in learning about American Sign Language, please see Ms. Justice or go by Mrs. Dutka’s art class during lunch on Fridays.   Learning a new cultural language is a great opportunity, and we hope to see this amazing club grow!
