The power of music not only affects our mood throughout the day but also affects our lives as a whole. Whether you’re listening to music while studying for an intensive test tomorrow or going to a concert to see your favorite band play, music is an important part of all of our lives and has influenced our social development and our overall well-being.
Sophomore Amia Clarke shared, “I almost always listen to music while working. It helps me focus and makes doing work more fun. Most of the time I have chill, easy music playing like Nirvana and Kendrick Lamar.”
As a high school student, our stress runs high, and that is a perfect reason to listen to music while studying. By doing this, it is proven to relieve your stress. When you’re listening to music, it triggers the brain to release dopamine into your brain, which helps improve your mood, as well as reduce your anxiety levels.
According to Florida National University, “Music is a way to process emotions and strengthen their resolve while being overwhelmed. People often turn to the music they can relate to as it helps them deal with stress in this way.”
Listening to music while engaging in studious activities is proven to help you pay attention and retain information more easily. As far back as the 1800s, researchers have found that music engages areas of the brain that are involved with your level of attentiveness, as well as areas that help with making predictions and storing information.
Dylan Crowther, a junior, stated, “Music helps me focus because the right song can help your mind really concentrate.”
Calming music is often played in the classroom to provide a level of comfort and grounding for the students working. Usually, students become more engaged in their work when the teacher plays soft music in the background. While some may think that playing music serves as a distraction, it was proven that playing it has more positive effects than negative.
“As an employee at Horry County Schools, it’s problematic for students to have earbuds in; however, my personal position as a human being is that I know that the research is out there to suggest that humans can benefit from listening to music while working. It helps them stay focused and grounded and for those who have problems with focusing in general, listening to music can be quite calming. This can be really effective in allowing students to be more productive in the classroom, ” commented Laneah Ravn, one of our English teachers.
Next time you find yourself stressing over a deadline or being unable to focus on an assignment, throw on some music and let your nerves dissipate. Don’t let your worries get the best of you and always remember that you have a way to take control of your mental health.
