The movie Beetlejuice was a hit movie when it came out in 1988. At the time, Tim Burton films were heavily anticipated due to the new and interesting elements provided for the time. (Caution: Some spoiler alerts)
According to Constance Grady from Vox, Tim Burton films like Beetlejuice are popular because they “play between the normal and the paranormal, the grounding in the real as events got decidedly unreal.”
This anticipation has been revived with the new sequel: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, starring Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton. It was released September 6 with Ryder and Keaton reprising their original roles from the first movie.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice follows Lydia Deetz (Ryder) into her adult life, moving back to Winter River after a tragedy strikes her family. Her rebellious daughter, Astrid Deetz (Ortega), stumbles upon a door to the afterlife. After Beetlejuice (Keaton) is summoned back into Lydia Deetz’s life, chaos ensues.
The sequel follows the basic plotline of the first movie with slightly different ways the plot points are developed, such as both Lydia Deetz and her daughter entering the afterlife, consequently meeting a certain long-lost person.
Personally, I found this movie to be a refreshing and pleasant watch as I got to enjoy a sequel to what was one of my favorite movies growing up. It brought back enjoyable characters from the first movie, such as Delia Deetz, while also introducing new characters.
The reviews on social media platforms like TikTok presented a large number of people interpreting the relationship between Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz as romantic, which was uncomfortable for me considering their ages when they met in the first film.
Gianna Reilly, a junior, also enjoyed the movie when she went to see it, despite “liking the original better.”
The opinions on these social media platforms about how the plot should’ve developed should not deter someone from going to see a movie. Considering this, if the first Beetlejuice is a favorite of yours, go watch the sequel.
