With the many clubs at school, one of our new clubs is the Asian Culture Club. It’s a club that welcomes all who want to learn about different Asian cultures.
The president and founder of the club is Chaeyul Lee who started the club because she recognized the growing Asian population in our county and our city.
Lee wanted to raise awareness about the different Asian cultures.
“I saw and experienced some struggles being a racial minority in this area,” Lee explained.
The club meets about one to two times a month on Fridays in G110, and they always ensure to send a reminder a few days before so that their members know the date. They have, so far, met five times this year with different fun activities including a guest speaker from Japan via Zoom and have done, and continuing to do, a pen pal workshop to send to a school in Bangkok, Thailand.
Jessica Vundavalli, a sophomore, is one of the people who found the club to be a helpful and fun experience.
Vundavalli shared, “My experience with the Asian Culture Club has been awesome. The whole vibe of the club is very friendly and everyone is treated like family. I joined the club because I wanted to help spread information about Asian culture to the people around me and just to be part of a group of people who want to know more about Asian culture!”
Alin Kim, the vice president of the club, also has found it enjoyable to share Asian culture through the club.
Kim and Vundavalli have both commented that their favorite activity was playing and making a game called Ddakji which is a traditional Korean game. The club members made the game and did a small tournament.
According to Lee, there are plans to get involved in “an origami session regarding the Lunar New Year” in which they will be collaborating with Origami for Goods MB. Through this event there will be service hours in which the students can gain.
They are also hoping to host an event in May to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
This club is a great opportunity to gain an understanding of diverse Asian cultures as well as being involved in fun activities, so come and check out the Asian Culture Club. There are no requirements, and everyone is welcome.
