The beauty and artwork of cinema is something that fills many individuals with longing and a sense of reason. It is an art form that has been displayed for hundreds of years and it continues to fill people with countless emotions. Whether it’s joy from a comedy, sorrow from a drama, or excitement from an action film, many can attest to these emotional experiences being often therapeutic in a sense. One of the ways film lovers were able to express their love for the art was by creating award shows. One of these award shows in particular is the Golden Globes, which aired on Sunday, Jan. 5.
The Golden Globes are awards presented for excellence in both international film and television. The award show is presented on streaming for movie lovers to tune into as their favorite directors, actresses, and actors are competing for several different awards. The Golden Globe Awards was first held on January 20, 1944 at the 20th century Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California. The award ceremony has been held ever since.
“I watch the Golden Globes every year. I was pretty excited to see all of the nominations as I loved both Wicked and The Substance. It shocked me to see them not win many awards,” sophomore Janki Patel adds.
The Golden Globes have several different categories with five different nominations each. Some of these categories include: Best Screenplay-Motion Picture, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This year’s winners caused some controversy as many note that they have never seen the films that primarily won.
This year’s show was hosted by American comedian and actress, Niki Glaser. She delivered several well-timed jokes that left the audience laughing. Many believe it was a significant step up after last year’s host, Jo Koy, who delivered several sexist and unfunny jokes that left both the audience and all viewers watching uncomfortable.
The Brutalist was one of the movies that swept the award show which came into the night with seven different nominations. Leading star Adrien Brody earned his first Golden Globe for his role, alongside Brady Cobert earning a best director win. The movie ultimately claimed the title of best drama motion picture which left many viewers shocked.
Freshman Maveah Asbury notes, “I would consider myself an avid movie watcher but I’ve never seen this movie. It shocked me to see that The Brutalist won so many awards.”
Another movie that drew everyone’s attention was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, which earned a total of 10 nominations that night. Known actresses Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana both starred in the foreign film. Saldana earned a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, while the film also earned both, Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
There were also some drama filled moments during the presentations.
- Wicked flourishes in references, but surprisingly, only won a singular award, which left many fans shocked.
- Demi Moore, a huge actress from the 80s, receives a huge round of applause while accepting her Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical.
- Karla Sofia Gascon, lead star in Emilia Perez, delivers a powerful message that “The light always wins over darkness.”
- Sofia Vergara yells “Give me one!”as Jodie Foster accepts the Golden Globe.
This year’s Golden Globes definitely did not disappoint in content or funny moments. For all movie lovers out there, see you next year!
