Track and Field is a sport that calls for dedication and endurance. Track events can range from a one-hundred meter dash to the two mile race. Our team as a whole is split into many different groups: the sprinters, distance, throwers, and jumpers.
Our team has had a successful season with many PR’s and wins at smaller Wednesday meets. The season is coming to an end with only the two regular season meets left, counties, and region.
David Lovette is the head coach for the track team this year, along with many assistant coaches. The sprinting coaches are Coach Iagulli and Coach Summervile. The distance coaches are Coach Weiss, Avery Bender, and Evan Heneberry. The throwing coach is Coach Dave, and the jumping coach is Coach Iagulli
Lovette shared, “This season these athletes have put in a lot of work, and they have had a very successful season thus far. I hope we can do big things at the county and region meets in the next few weeks.”
Avery Bender, an alumni from Carolina Forest, is now back at “home” as an assistant coach after graduating in 2023. Avery went to Charleston Southern to continue her running career. After some time away, she chose to come back to Coastal Carolina to continue her path in teaching. Now as a Teaching Fellow, she is interning at Carolina Forest and now an assistant coach.
Bender shared, “It’s weird being back because it feels like just yesterday when I was at school as a student/athlete, and I miss it! It is very refreshing and fun to see the new generations experiencing what I experienced and to be on the other side now.”
The CF boys and girls 4×800 teams have been very successful so far this track season. At Beach Run, a very competitive meet with teams from all over the state, the girls placed fifth overall, and the boys took second place.
The 4×100 boys team is ranked in the state. This is a huge accomplishment for them; we cannot wait to see what they do at the upcoming higher up meets!
Tyler Zehfuss, a junior, on the track team is now running for his third year.
Zehfuss expressed, “This season has gone by really fast. I have enjoyed being a part of the boys 4×800 the most and I am excited to see what we do at the upcoming meets.”
Our track team is made up of so many people with many different skills and talents. We are so proud of their season so far and excited to see what’s to come in the near future. Counties will be held on April 16at Aynor High School. Regions will be on April 30 at Myrtle Beach High School with lower states, and states to follow.
