It’s soccer season! The Carolina Forest community is big on soccer, so when it’s that time of the year, it’s definitely recognized! These soccer teams are very excited for what this season has brought them and the school. Jeff Goodman is the Women’s Varsity Head Coach and Gene Dougherty is the Men’s Varsity Head Coach.
Coach Goodman commented that he has been coaching many sports over many years, but he has done a full circle since going back to coaching soccer. His first time he coached soccer was many years ago at a middle school in North Carolina. Goodman also shared that he is glad where he is today.
Junior Madeline Runyon plays varsity soccer and her position is central defensive midfielder. Runyon expressed that she is the player she is today because of her club soccer coach and the best friends soccer has brought her over the years.
“My favorite part of this season was when we beat Saint James’ four region streak in penalty kicks and getting to celebrate with the team at Sonic afterwards,” shared Runyon.
This season the women’s team was given the title of Region Champions; Coach Goodman was also recognized as Region Coach of the Year!
Goodman shared, “It is an honor to be recognized by my peers as one of the top coaches in the region. I feel very blessed to do what I do, but I feel this award is more of a reflection of the hard work and accomplishments of the entire program. The players and assistant coaches played a huge role in this award.”
Kingston Smith is a freshman here at CF and explained that he loved this season because of all of the experience he got on the team. He was put in as a full-time starter and got to play soccer more than he thought which was great for someone his age.
Smith stated, “I believe all of the work and practice has made me improve by far this year and made me become the soccer player I am today.”
These student-athletes and coaches have put many hours and effort into these teams and worked hard for where they are today. The men’s and women’s soccer team have enjoyed this season and all it has brought them mentally and physically.
