Carolina Forest High School’s girls’ golf team is teeing off this season with skill and a drive to make their mark on the course. Girls golf is a growing sport that gives athletes the opportunity to experience a competitive environment. When playing on a golf team in high school, players compete individually for points that add up on their team score. The lower the number of points, the better.
Most people just play the game for fun or have a little hobby, but our Panther girls play it competitively against other teams in the area. The team for this school year includes Kacey Gallagher, Lilia Kosonen, Minea Kosonen, Claudia Mediate, and Lexi Wohlers.
Coach Adam Willm is a math teacher as well at CFHS. He has been playing since he was 10-years-old.
Willm commented, “It’s just fun. You can do it forever and you can do it until you die.”
The girls have already competed in multiple matches so far this year: Lady Chief Invitational, Horry County Invitational, Palmetto Tournament of Champion, and rounds with local schools like Conway, St. James, and Loris.
Kacey Gallagher, a senior at the Academy for the Arts, Science, and Technology, explained that it feels amazing winning events like the Lady Chief Invitational.
“It’s a mix of pure excitement, relief, and just knowing all the hard work paid off. What I find most challenging is staying in a positive attitude for the whole round even after a bad shot.”
Coach Willm explained that the Lady Chief Invitational had fifteen good teams in North Myrtle Beach. It was the first time the girls have won a tournament in three years.
Most of the girls stated that their dads were the reason why they started to play golf.
Lexi Wohlers, a senior at CFHS, admitted that she did not want to play at first.
“Being with my friends and how good I started to become made me realize I wanna play more.”
Wohlers has now been playing for five years.
Minea Kosonen, a senior at CFHS, said that she has been playing golf for 12 years. She stated the reason that she loves playing golf is “the feeling of wanting to shoot good.”
Our girls golf team has accomplished many things while they have been here. They have won and competed in many tournaments, made hole in ones, and have made States multiple times.
Lilia Kosonen, a freshman at CFHS, said the most challenging thing for her about golf are the narrow golf courses, while Wohlers stated her most challenging thing to deal with is the mental aspect of the game.
The girls and Coach Willm are working hard to make this a great season and hopefully make it to States this year. The growth, hard work, and determination have gotten them to where they are today. Make sure to check out our girls’ golf team and attend one of their tournaments.
