If you’re brave enough to face your fears this Halloween, there are haunted houses and trails to test your courage! Each month of October, according to The Wall Street Journal, about 46.5 million people visit abandoned asylums, to corn mazes, where creatures lurk in the night.
Now, of course, some haunted houses are obviously not too scary, but some places go ALL out. Many places use horrifying prosthetics and realistic props. Some venues even require participants to sign a waiver and stay the night!
The number one-ranked scariest haunted houses in America is called Cutting Edge, located in Fort Worth, Texas. It is known for its crazy tech animatronics and horrifying visuals/pictures. The house is an intense, multi-story attraction; it takes visitors an average of 55 minutes to explore the house. The house was first built 100 years ago as a meat packing plant.
Now, for a more local haunted house, you can go to the Nightmare Dungeon Haunted Attraction in Greenville, S.C., which claims to be “voted Scariest Haunted House in S.C.” It features a two-mile hayride, two haunted houses, and a walking trail though the subway.
Logan Zavodny is a junior at Carolina Forest High School who had the chance to go to the “Nightmare Dungeon Haunted Attraction.”
“That haunted house really, really scared me. The people in the costumes scaring you were actually really good, and it didn’t feel like a kiddie house, ” commented Zavodny.
Many people, however, do not enjoy being scared for fun, including myself.
Angel Beni, a sophomore at CFHS, stated, “I really don’t like getting scared for fun. Every time anyone tries to scare me for fun, I end up in tears, so I’m not a big fan.”
Ashley Proctor is also a sophomore and a member of The Prowler Staff. She feels the opposite of Beni’s reaction to fright moments.
Proctor shared, “I honestly LOVE being scared for fun. I am always one to play horror games or watch horror movies. I especially love the movies with psychological scares.”
There are some spine-tingling attractions across America that push limits of fright. Whether you crave jump or psychological horror, these haunting venues promise an experience you will never forget.
