APES Explore the Wild

Nature walks, kayaking, bonfires, ziplining, stargazing… these are all things Mrs. Annie Johnson’s Advanced Placement environmental science class endured on their camping trip.

On October 26, APES went to Playcard to spend the night. They learned about biodiversity and the importance of preserving habitats. Mrs. Johnson has been taking her students to Playcard for three years now.

Playcard is an outdoor environmental education center owned by Horry County. It is to teach students about natural sciences and allow them to witness living things first-hand.

“It brings the students together and builds relationships,” said Mrs. Johnson.

Senior Amber Wellings had a great time camping. Because of the trip, she knows how to start a fire and tell the difference between certain species of plants.

“It was a good experience, and I got to do some really fun stuff, including ziplining,” said Wellings.

This year is Mrs. Johnson’s biggest AP class with a total of 17 students. She hopes that it will only expand, and she will be able to continue these hands on field trips.
