From Armenia to America

Many aren’t aware of how many different cultures our school represents. One of the many cultures is the Armenian culture represented by Gayaneh Gasparyan. She came to America 4 months ago for the chance to travel, experience a different culture, and learn our language. In May, she will return to Armenia with memories of great times and friends from her time spent in America.

Gayaneh came to America with some of her friends who are also exchange students. They all flew to America together, but are now living in different states.

“At first, it was hard to learn the language because we don’t really learn to speak English at school,” shares Gayaneh.

It took her a few weeks to catch on, but now she’s fluent!

The Armenian and American lifestyles are similar in daily living but do differ some in beliefs.

“Teenagers go to school and adults go to work. There are some differences in stereotypes and the way people understand things.”

Gayaneh also mentioned  the differences in schools.

“In Armenian high schools, you just choose the branch you’re interested in. For example, if you choose math/physics, you learn those subjects for 3 years. You study with the same classmates in the same classroom. The teachers change rooms instead of the students changing.”

Gayaneh will miss her American host family and friends so much.

She states, “I have become more independent. I have realized who I am and what I can do.”
