Will New California be the nation’s 51st state?

Monday, January 15th, 2018, the founders of New California publicly submitted their Declaration of Independence to the California Legislature as well as the Federal Congress. The founders reported that there is “a history of repeated injuries and usurpations” and that they can no longer bear the “over taxation, regulation, and mono-party politics” California has to offer.

The proposed state will be made up of roughly 135,000 square miles of mostly rural counties out of California’s current 159,000 square mileage. This would leave California with a meager 24,000 square miles, consisting of the booming coastal urban areas known to all. Presently, New California would contain 21 counties. This number is steadily growing; however, New California isn’t reaching a popular note in society.

With a saddening 68% voting ‘No’ on New California’s personal survey and heavy controversy on social platforms, it seems New California has a bigger battle ahead of them.

On Twitter, Steve Hofstetter stated: “New California, your problem isn’t that your state government doesn’t represent its people. Your problem is that the majority of the people in your state don’t agree with you. So your answer is to run away.”

On the other hand, Kambree Kawahine Koa said, “New California will have my vote 100%.”

As of now, the potential 51st state still has a couple hurdles to conquer before making the history textbooks. Regardless, their fight for sovereignty continues.  New California Activists will still fight for what they desire:  a new state that is suited to their needs.
