Proms of the Past…Our Teachers Share

Ann M. Twigg, Staff Advisor

Do I dare start this article with “Back in the day?”  It’s been over thirty-five years ago since I attended my high school prom.  I remember begging my mom to help me put a baby-blue prom dress on lay-away at Belk.  She fussed about it a bit, but it wasn’t because of the $78 price tag.  Yes, that was considered a bit overboard in the early 80’s. My mom was actually wary of the style.  It was an off-the-shoulder dress.  How could her daughter reveal her bare shoulders?  I did wear the dress, but to be honest, I remember having more fun decorating than we did dancing at the prom.

Ms. McHugh’s prom attire story is better than mine.  She and her date decided to wear matching tuxedos.  They were the first couple to do this at her school.  Both her siblings followed “suit” and started a family tradition the next two years.

How would you feel if you arrived at the prom Thursday night and had no music?  Ms. Warren shared that when she showed up for her eleventh grade prom, the band did not!  They used the radio for music for awhile, but many of them left early.

Ms. Bane, one of this year’s prom sponsors and a CFHS alumna, doesn’t have one particular story that stands out, but she did get to enjoy her prom ten years ago at the same venue as this year–the Marina Inn at Grand Dunes!  “I loved getting all dolled up with my friends–getting our hair done, nails done, makeup done, etc.  It was fun to be with friends.”

Ms. Beattie, Ms.Giganti, Ms. Bane, and Ms. Hodges were gracious enough to share their prom pictures.  Thank you!

No matter when our proms took place, it is a memorable time for everyone.  Have a wonderful and safe night!
