Palmetto’s Boys State

Palmettos+Boys+State

CFHS is proud to announce five delegates to Palmetto Boys State, a program sponsored by The American Legion for young men to learn about our American government and politics.   Rising seniors who depict outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service are considered.   Congratulations to Brentley DeLamar, Lyjah Degrood, Jacob Dozler, Kyle Wendland, and Christian Tumbleson (pictured left to right).

High school teachers and counselors nominate more than 900 rising seniors each year.  Those nominated are interviewed and selected by the local American Legion Post.  It is a tremendous opportunity for leadership training.  Our students will join other delegates from our state this summer at Anderson University.  They will  compose party platforms, prepare speeches, debate current issue, and vote for elected offices. The students also have opportunities to compete in athletics or college bowl trivia, as well as participate in a media school which publishes a daily paper and produces nightly news videos.

Palmetto Boys State is one of the top scholarship opportunities for students to obtain recognition and scholarships from $500 to full tuition.  Samsung offers twenty $20,000 scholarships, nationwide, each year.

The program continues to spark an interest and pride in government on a local and national level.  Many of our state’s community, business, and political leaders have participated in Palmetto Boys State, including Joel Smith, former CEO of Bank of America, and Corey Chavis, former NFL player/TV analyst.
