The Retiring of Billy Wilder
May 24, 2018
Witty, compassionate, maybe a tad on the sarcastic side… these words scream Billy Wilder, one of our science teachers. Wilder is retiring after 26 years of providing knowledge and sharing laughter with students. After teaching here since the opening of the school 21 years ago, he has decided to follow his wife’s example and retire. Brenda Wilder was a former media specialist assistant.
Prior to teaching, Wilder worked in the Science Department for Coastal Carolina University for ten years. Currently teaching Biology and Biology Honors, Wilder shows a continuous interest in science. However, the few things that Wilder loves more than science includes spending time with those he loves, doing projects like household renovations and traveling.
So many amazing memories have been created here at Carolina Forest and Wilder will never forget them.
“[My best memory is] probably worrying about a particular student and wondering if he would make it in the real world. Then opening my door to a man who had just graduated from Marine boot camp and was on his way to his specialized training assignment,” expressed Wilder.
One of the many things Wilder will miss about teaching would be the interaction he has with his students.
“I am always learning something new from my students,” shared Wilder. “Probably a lot more than they do from me!”
“Mr. Wilder always brightened my mornings during class. He has always been kind and funny, but most of all, memorable.” said Camren Wilkinson, a freshman in Wilder’s first block class.
Wilder can’t wait to put his retirement plans into action!
“I am looking forward to a lot more kayaking in the inlet and very little driving in traffic,” stated Wilder. “I plan to do some traveling both stateside and abroad with my wife.”
Sydney Byers, also a freshman in Wilder’s first block class, stated, “It’s not going to be the same without him next year.”
Mr. Wilder will be dearly missed, and we will never forget all the fun, loving memories we have with him.
