Would You Like to Own a Wolf?

Howling Woods Farms, located in New Jersey, may seem like the name of an ordinary farm, but it is far from ordinary. Howling Woods Farms is a non-profit organization that rescues and trains wolves and wolfdogs. They also offer tours where people can interact with them.

The Howling Woods Farms’ mission is to rid the myths most know about wolves/wolfdogs and help with the rescue and placement of them. While many think wolves are dangerous to own, Howling Woods works with these animals to prove those people wrong.

While some may think all dogs are wolfdogs since dogs are descendants of wolves, not all are. Wolfdogs are known to have pure wolves in their recent backgrounds, such as a parent or grandparent. Decades ago, breeders would breed pure wolves to sell to zoos, exhibitions, and the public. While this kind of breeder no longer exists, many breeders will still wolfdogs, a mix of a wolf and a domestic dog and sell them to the public. Ownership of wolves and wolfdogs is legal in 13 states, including South Carolina.

Howling Woods Farms is far from ordinary because they allow and promote the adoption of wolves and wolfdogs. In order to adopt one, it must be legal in your state. In addition, Howling Woods Farms requires you to complete an application, own another canine who will serve as a companion, provide a spacious and secure environment, provide contact to your current veterinarian, allow a home check, complete an adoption contract, and make an adoption of $200.00.

Despite what others think, trained wolves and wolfdogs are wonderful pets to own. I should know because I own one.
