Heaven’s Surface

Matthew Stone

I remember the first time

I breached the clouds:

The earth swallowed

from my eyes

Then suddenly

a sunset ascended above

of which it would inevitably

sink below the horizon

and to think

we are gifted when the sun falls

beneath the clouds

But to see cotton-dipped in dandelion

and blood-stained cotton contrasting

with the skyline above the world and

to thank God would take nature’s glory.
