Ann M. Twigg, Teacher

Laura Weaver, a teacher at CFHS and the owner of Glass Bottom Kayak Tours, kicked off their “Sundays are for Giving” series with an amazing offer to help raise money for our journalism department.  Half the sales of the Sea Turtle Nesting Tour on May 19 went to fund new equipment for our digital newspaper and broadcasting classes.

What started out being a disappointing morning of shark teeth hunting turned out to be one of the most enjoyable afternoons I’ve had in a long time.  I, along with my youngest daughter and two close friends, had a delicious lunch at Duffy Street Seafood Shack in North Myrtle Beach before heading to our kayaking journey.  We asked for tandem (two person) kayaks, knowing that we’d have a better time sharing laughs and comments along the way. I can honestly tell people I have danced with water.

Weaver was a most gracious host, making sure we had what we needed before our adventure to Waties Island, a turtle nesting habitat just north of Cherry Grove. We paddled our way to the island, listening to interesting coastal facts from our awesome guide, Lucas.  Once we banked our boats on the shore, we spent close to 1.5 hours exploring the depths of a wrecked boat, hunting for shells, playing in the warm waters of the sound, and of course, taking pictures. The ocean breeze made our trip back to the boating area a most relaxing time.

Emma Dunn, a sophomore, shared, “My favorite part of kayaking was my ability to gain a better understanding of the local wildlife and environment, as well as spending time with my family and meeting new people from my community.”

Glass Bottom Kayak Tours offers a variety of tours, including a most beautiful sunset trip that will take your breath away.  This is a memorable experience for families and friends who enjoy all the gifts our coastal area has to offer. Click on the link below to book your adventure today!
