During November, a group of  Carolina Forest students formed together to create CF Diversity Club. The goal of this organization is to create safe environments for all sexual identities and for unique students to express themselves. It is also set up to promote harmony and respect by campaigning against prejudice, bias, bullying and hate towards those that are perceived as different from the majority. This is a club to raise positive awareness and to celebrate its members.

CF Diversity Club was founded by two Carolina Forest students, Xic Henderson and Alexa Halling, to promote inclusion for LGQBT+ students within our school. These two students saw a need to promote student empowerment and create a safe environment. This club helps with student bonding along with connecting within the group and beyond.

I founded  the club because when I moved to Carolina Forest, I had a difficult time finding a diverse and supportive community. I feel like Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)  and diversity clubs are an integral part of making students feel welcome and gives them an opportunity to advocate for themselves and others in school,” shared Halling, a junior at Carolina Forest.

Henderson, a sophomore  at Carolina Forest added, “I  started the club because with such a large school, it was hard to find friends that I could relate to. We found that creating a club that includes everyone gives people an opportunity to meet new people. ”

Along with creating a safe space within our community,  CF Diversity Club strives to spread awareness and educate the community on LGQBT+  issues. CF Diversity Club is active on Instagram posting updated information on advancements and obstacles for people within the LGBTQ+ community.

“We started the club because we have a big diverse student population, and some people struggle to find their place. Our goal of Diversity Club is to create a safe space where people can meet and make buddies,” added, Leigha Farthing, a psychology teacher at Carolina Forest.

The Diversity Club meets every Thursday in Ms. Farthing’s room (C105). The club is trying to get involved with Pride Myrtle Beach and some other Pride organizations.

CF Diversity Club is making all students feel welcomed at Carolina Forest by creating an environment of inclusion, not exclusion. The newly founded club is just what some students might need to feel accepted and comfortable at Carolina Forest.
