All kinds of people love everything about pumpkin spice. Pumpkin spice originated from Dutch East India Company in the Netherlands. It is a mix of spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice, all native to Southeast Asian islands. However, it doesn’t actually contain any pumpkin. It feels like every year more and more things are coming out pumpkin- flavored. For example, there are various pumpkin spice drinks, sweet treats, cream cheese, tuna, deodorant, toothpaste, and more.
According to “The Baltimore Sun”, “…the phrase ‘pumpkin spice’ can summon scents and memories of fall.”
Kaylynn Fish, a senior, comments, “It tastes like pumpkin pie, which is my favorite pie and it’s super nostalgic for me. It tastes like the way fall makes me feel. I love the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Creme Frappuccino, or the Dunkin’ Pumpkin Spice Hot Cocoa.”
However, Karlee Loyd, a junior, feels the opposite.
Loyd shares, “Pumpkin spice is so gross and tastes like dirt.”
According to “CBS News,” “Over the past year, Americans spent more than $400 million on products laced with pumpkin spice.”
Mrs. Morgan Bane, an English teacher, loves all of it.
“Honestly all of it… coffee, pie, baked goods, cream cheese, ice cream, and more!” “I think because it’s one of those things that when I taste or smell it, it makes me feel nostalgic for memories from a time of year that is meant to be spent with family and friends,” expresses Bane.
However, some people just prefer apple- flavored things. Every year the fall air is filled with the delicious smell of pumpkin spice and apple, but usually pumpkin takes the lead of people’s favorites. Even though not everyone loves pumpkin and pumpkin spice things, it still fills the nostalgia of fall.
