DECA, which stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, was founded in 1946 by Chris Kimbell and Michael Wayne. This club prepares leaders and students for careers in marketing, public speaking, and finance. DECA can help benefit students in their future careers and prepare them for their future workplace.
There are a total of three advisors including Jennifer Greeson, Mr. West, and Mrs. Muckenfuss. 33 students are registered as members of the DECA
The students at the school and other students from around the country attend and can showcase their knowledge and skills at various events giving them opportunities for scholarships, travel, and networking.
Greeson states, “DECA is an awesome organization for all students, especially those involved in business or marketing courses. DECA is a national club and has been in existence for over 75 years.”
DECA has helped out with service events that include campus clean up, working concessions at football games, collecting items for the local animal shelter, feeding the Danish exchange students and providing them goody bags. They have also provided holiday parties for some of the special needs classes at CF. DECA is also involved in supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Ronald McDonald House.”
Greeson also shared, “Students pick an event that they are interested in or have had some experience in like a past job or class. They study and take a test before attending the competition and then they compete in a role play at the competition. If students rank in the top three at States, they are eligible for ICDC, which is Nationals. I also think most of our competing students would say that DECA has made them a better leader, more confident in speaking, and a better person.”
According to Laceyschools.org, DECA awards over $250,000 in scholarships to students every year. The more students participate in activities and competitive events, the greater chance a student has in getting a scholarship.
DECA helps students experience real-world situations and problems they have to solve. It provides business simulations and role-playing experiences for workplaces. It is also good to join to improve your public speaking skills, critical thinking, and presentation skills.
Maya Bullard, a junior states “DECA is an amazing way to learn leadership skills and get ready for real life situations.”
Joining DECA can be very beneficial to the student’s lives. It can enhance a student’s resume, valuable insight to the business world, and build a strong foundation for future success. The organization not only helps academically but also professionally.
