It’s that time of year when winter sports begin their final push towards the end of the season.

The CFHS wrestling team placed first in the Marion tournament, second at Lexington, and third in the Boneyard. In Horry County Carolina Forest came out on top with wins against Conway and Socastee. This team has spent many long hours after school practicing for upcoming matches, cutting weight, and bonding as a team.

Senior wrestler Joseph Fetterman says, “This season has been awesome compared to last year. We got lots of mat time and did extremely well in tournaments. Overall, the team has improved significantly.”

Many of the wrestlers have to cut weight in order to wrestle in their desired weight class. Junior wrestler Nick Preciado says his diet consists of “lots of salads’ when he is trying to be in the 160 weight class. Senior wrestler Brandon Jacoby’s diet of choice consists of “eggs with kale and cheese along with a protein shake” in order to wrestle in the 160 bracket.

In wrestling, there are many moves that can help you pull out the win against your opponent. Some of the favorites here in The Forest are the high crotch, sweep single, and the sitout reversal.

Head wrestling Coach Perdue shares, “I think the season has gone great. We’ve only lost one match this whole season and are looking to lock up the region title this week. It’s going to be an extremely tough playoffs, but hopefully we can make some noise.”

Our Varsity basketball teams are also having a strong and exciting season.

The CFHS men’s basketball team is ranked third in the 5A region six standings and are only out ranked by Conway and Sumter High School. Overall, the varsity team is currently 10-6 with a 0.63% win percentage. The women’s basketball team is ranked fifth in the 5A region six standings. Throughout the season the varsity girls have played 16 games to date, winning 10 out of the 16 games thus far.

Senior basketball player Seth Debruhl says his favorite part of basketball season is “the bus rides after a big win.”

Debruhl, a senior on the Varsity team, shot six three-pointers against St. James this past Thursday. This allowed CFHS to come out on top with a game ending score of 77-56.

Sophomore basketball player Rachel Durkin shares, “ My favorite part of the season is playing with my friends and learning new plays.”

Recently the CFHS Lady Panthers came out on top with a final score of 34-22 against the Loris Lions.

Best of luck to all our winter sports teams as the season comes to an end.
