If pop culture had a capital city, Comic-Con would be it. Our CFHS Comic-Con Club focuses on pop-culture such as movies, comics, books, anime, manga, and TV. It deals with categories like fantasy, horror, and sci-fi. Comic-Con is a fun environment for kids who love all different kinds of Pop-culture.
The club keeps up with upcoming shows, games, and movie releases and attends regional comic convention dates/locations. Once a year a group of students from the club is selected to volunteer at a local comic-con at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. At the beginning of this year, students involved were able to work at the Boardwalk Comic-con in Myrtle Beach.
During the club meetings after school, students participate in Kahoot sessions to test their comic-con knowledge for prizes. Deborah Sweller and Thomas Bennett are the club sponsors.
Mr. Bennett said, “This club is a fun experience for students and gives them a chance to talk with like-minded peers about the pop-culture topics that interest them.”
The club operates around 35 members. The president of the club, Zion Wims, really enjoys organizing the club and being a leader.
“Being the president of the Comic-Con Club is fun because I get to organize little games every Friday. I also get to pick out people to be in the activity committee that helps plan other games on Friday’s just in case I can’t come up with any ideas,” Wims commented.
Some people who also have leadership positions are Grace Thomas, Skylear Roehr, and Lev Brackat.
There is also an activities committee that is currently forming to help run club meetings. The leadership comes up with the ideas of what to do at each meeting, so this will bring more people in to help generate ideas based on various interests.
Aminah Djerah, a member of the CFHS Comic-Con club, shared, “We go to this club on Fridays during lunch, and it can usually involve anything that the group wants to do. I remember people making some slideshows about their interests, and presenting it on screen. One of my personal favorites of the club is how sometimes we get to watch “mystery showings.”
Comic-Con is a super cool environment for people to go and be themselves. Meeting new people and bonding over the same passion is a great thing to have in high school.
