As winter fades and spring approaches, athletes have begun gearing up for a new season. Spring sports bring excitement and fresh opportunities, but they also place new physical and mental demands on athletes.
For sports in general, preparation is crucial. When your body is properly conditioned and prepared, it’s able to handle the physical demand of the sport better.
An article written by Advanced Orthopedic Associates states, “If you jump straight into intense training or competition without prior preparation, you may experience muscle soreness, fatigue, or even overuse injuries. Taking the time to prepare your body helps minimize the risk of these issues and allows you to enjoy the sport to the fullest.”
The emphasis on preparation is especially true for spring sports like soccer.
According to Jeff Goodman, CFHS’s varsity soccer coach, “Open workouts started at the beginning of January; however, we have been preparing for the season since the beginning of the school year in our soccer weight training class.”
This early conditioning allows players to build strength and endurance before the season officially begins.
Coach Goodman also offered advice for future players hoping to try out for the team.
“It is important to come to tryouts in shape and ready to put your best foot forward. It helps to have experience playing at a competitive level.”
This preparation can make a significant difference in an athlete’s performance and confidence during the tryout process. Offering advice for tryouts is Amelia McCauley, CFHS’s girls lacrosse coach.
“Besides skills, we look for effort, enthusiasm, and coachability. We are always watching how athletes put effort into drills and if they hustle in transitions between drills. We also look for athletes who are able to take coaching points and apply them. Future players should attend as many workouts as possible! Also, watch games and research drills to practice at home—it’s very beneficial to understand fundamental skills as soon as possible!”
Ultimately, the transition into spring sports is about more than just the first day of practice; it is the consistent preparation that builds strength, prevents injury, and sets athletes up for success. By training early and maintaining a strong work ethic athletes can enter the season feeling ready.
