Graduating from high school is one of the most exciting milestones in a young person’s life. Once you get your high school diploma, your future is filled with endless possibilities. The excitement that comes with this new chapter can also bring feelings of uncertainty.
The transition from high school to college is the first major step to true independence. Students learn to adapt to different situations and learn how to figure things out on their own. In their new environment, students have the opportunity to experience new expectations and the responsibility to manage time, priorities, and decisions on their own. It helps students grow within themselves, discover more about themselves, and prepare for the future. Most students live on their own which is a big step for most students.
The US Career Institute states, “One in four first-time college students don’t return for their second year. That number doesn’t mean college is impossible; it means the transition is real and students who prepare for it do better.”
Some things that college freshmen usually face can be homesickness, managing a heavier workload, and balancing school and social life. Without parents and teachers reminding them to do so, students must take responsibility for their own success.
Jalee Cala, a CFHS alumna and a CCU freshman, shared, “College was scary at first, but once you get the hang of it and create a routine, everything is smooth sailing after that. The transition into college was definitely a mental challenge for me, but after the first couple of weeks in college, I started to really enjoy myself and the freedom I had.”
From the outside looking in, it seems that college is all fun and games. Nevertheless, it is very important for the future of students who want to pursue an education and a career.
Senior Lucia Marino explained, “It feels like high school goes by slowly until you’re finally deciding what you want to do in college and what the next steps are for your future.”
In the end, going from high school to college is a big move for students. The determined, focused, and confident students are the ones who will finish college and make it to the end. It is difficult to enter new environments and uncomfortable situations, but those who put the effort into it are the ones who will achieve more success.
