Over 42 million citizens in the United States have served in some form of the Armed Forces.
Although going into the military gives a role of being extremely devoted, it helps people to develop a sense of being sharp-minded and physically skilled. Through all the hard labor and discipline, our military participants are prepared for any conditions. It helps the mind to always be aware of its surroundings, which helps it develop quick and logical thinking, along with strategies for combat
Ian Root is a teacher at Carolina Forest who dedicated part of his life to the Army.
“Some benefits I had while both in and out of the armed forces was being able to go to college. The Army assisted with me obtaining both my Bachelor’s degree and my Master’s degree. It helped me become a teacher for one, but also being able to still associate with college students while being in the Army helped me re-enter non military life a lot quicker.”
Because veterans are playing such an important role to protect the country, they receive special funds for healthcare, food, housing, and even families. In addition, the Armed Forces pay for your standard of living but also help you with deployment, called “Deployment entitlements.” Deployment entitlements give an extra boost of money while you’re away from home. These forms of payment depend on your position in the military.
Not only does the military give you exceptional income support, but it also gives you an opportunity to explore the world. Some common places to be relocated overseas are Okinawa, Japan, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany, and Pyeongtaek, South Korea. Getting stationed overseas gives you chances that your original country doesn’t, including meeting new people, developing bonds, exploring new cultures, and also finding self-discovery.
Although he’s not local, Michael Humard is currently serving at the Parris Island Marine Corp base.
“I’m currently serving in active duty at Parris Island, and I’ve been in the military since I was 18. I’ve received extra money to help pay me and my wife’s basic housing. My wife currently works at the daycare on base, so it gives her an opportunity to have a nice paying job on base. The Marines has given me great opportunities for my future and I will continue to serve.
Due to all the Veterans’ diligence, they benefit from certain education exceptions. Any branch provides different forms of scholarships that partially pay or even pay fully for your education. If you can’t afford money for education, you can apply for federal grants and loans, such as the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunities Grant Program. This program helps undergraduates who come from low income families finance their education, giving future opportunities for veterans themselves, or their children. The Yellow Ribbon Program provides more of an exploratory scholarship for out-of-state, private schools, international colleges, and certain tuition fees.
Ella Spears is a sophomore in Carolina Forest’s NJROTC program.
“I really do see plenty of opportunities if I ever wanted to join the military. I feel like it would help me get into better schools that I want and more chances to have. It does seem like a challenge, but it has good outcomes.
In addition to the Armed Forces supporting the veterans, they also support your family. They support the purpose of covering all of your family’s needs by providing support networks, counseling services, and education services such as enrolling a child into primary school, additional support is provided when the loved one must be deployed or relocated. The Exceptional Family Member Program helps families with special needs relatives with medical, educational, and community services, to help support their loved one with their conditions.
Along with helping your family members with funding and extra care, the military provides an assorted amount of careers to choose from as well as administration, aviation, chaplaincy, communications, cybersecurity, engineering, intelligence, legal branches, logistics, medical fields, military police, special bands, and special operations. If a family member is of age to begin jobs, many bases offer general jobs such as restaurants, retail, and even child development. All jobs depend on the size of the base.
The military cares for each veteran and the ones that are still in service. We thank you for the work you’ve done to come this far. We appreciate what they all do to help veterans and their families.
