Many teens have jobs and they have to juggle that along with school, possibly sports and home life. Teens have their jobs to prove independence or payments or expectations. Teen employment is becoming the usual thing. It’s what’s expected.
There are many working teens at CFHS. Junior Abigail Lamfers says she pays for half of her car insurance and the rest for spending money.
“I rarely have enough time to do schoolwork and other things I want to do, like spending time with friends. I like to have money that I can use to shop and do things I may not do otherwise,” shared Lamfers.
A group of students were surveyed on how they spend the money they earn. 30% people say they use it for a car payment or car insurance, 20% people say they spend it on gas, 40% people say it’s just spending money, and 10% put their money in a savings account.
Junior Jakarius Ramsey says is not currently paying for anything, but he plans on saving his money to fix his car.
“There are definitely some challenges. I had to make a difficult decision on either quitting my job and focusing on school or only working weekends and have school during the week. I like seeing new faces and making new conversations with people, especially the elderly people. I also like that I’m serving my community,” shares Ramsey
According to an article entitled, “10 Benefits of Having a Job in High School,” “Getting a part-time job while in high school can provide teenagers with a wealth of valuable skills, experiences and benefits that will serve them well beyond their school years. Though juggling school, activities, social lives and employment can be challenging, the rewards of working as a teen outweigh the demands. The lessons learned from holding down a job at a young age build responsibility, time management abilities, communication skills and more.”
In conclusion, getting a job as a teen can help prepare high school students for future success in college and their eventual careers. By holding a job, teens gain independence, build confidence, and prepare themselves for future success in school, work, and life.
