Girls wrestling is quickly emerging as one of the most thrilling and empowering sports for young girls and women, offering them the chance to develop both physically and mentally. Wrestling provides opportunities to learn resilience, discipline, and strength, offering girls the ability to confront stereotypes and build self-assurance.
According to NBC news, “A new generation of girl wrestlers are proving that the mats aren’t just for boys.”
University of Colorado Colorado Springs explained, “It has been growing steadily since 2004 as high schools, colleges and universities in the United States have developed clubs and sanctioned programs.”
CFHS is home to some great female wrestlers who will go far if they choose: Brianna Bartolini, Sofia Caballero, Cindy Chung, Navaeh Enamorado-Hudson, Novalus Green and Avah Scott.
Brianna Bartolini, a freshman at Atlantic Collegiate Academy, is a strong competitor. She just recently won 4th at the South Carolina State Championship. She has worked hard and has been training for a victory like this.
Another state qualifier is freshman Cindy Chung, who was new to the sport this year. Chung discovered wrestling in her early ages and decided to give it a go when her middle school science teacher mentioned the sport to her. She finally committed to the sport in November, 2025.
Chung commented, “Starting this sport as a female was hard, but the more I competed, the more comfortable I got.”
Not only is Chung a wrestler, she also enjoys volleyball, sleeping, and listening to music.
Sofia Caballero was introduced to this sport by Chung. She wanted to see if she was physically capable of such a sport.
“I really struggled with the mental part of this sport. I always get in my head a lot about my progress,” Caballero voiced.
Another wrestler, Avah Scott, wanted to try something other than her main sport, cheer.
“One of the biggest challenges I face is keeping up with the conditioning,” Avah explained.
For most, wrestling becomes a developing experience that empowers them to take on obstacles both on and off the mat with confidence and pride.
