Best of the 70s

The 70s: Bell bottoms, roller skating, and John Lennon. The floppy disk, the terror of Jaws, and Joe Namath. Anyone remember the yellow Sony Walkman that everyone wanted?   The 70s were a time for great fashion and even better music. So, as a lover of everything 70s, I often take myself back in time:

  1. Vinyl- I love vinyl. I personally own dozens of vinyl records, and I infinitely prefer them over listening to music digitally. Musicians put so much creativity and time into developing not only their music but also the physical copies of the art. Something about being able to see how artists design their album covers, and the tangibility of the music, makes it realer and adds another level to what you listen to that just can’t be achieved digitally.
  2.  Feathered hair- Everyone and their mother loved Farrah Fawcett, and twice as many people wanted her hair. Feathered hair was a staple of 70s beauty, and rightfully so. Voluminous and bouncy hair is gorgeous and one of my favorite hair styles ever.
  3. Circular sunglasses- Worn by celebrities like John Lennon, Elton John, and Ozzy Osbourne,“teashades” were a huge hit in the 70s. They became a signature of hippie culture throughout the 60s and 70s, making a huge comeback after their first wave of popularity in the 20s and 30s. Round sunglasses are one of my favorite 70s pieces because they go with everything and look amazing if you wear them correctly.
  4. Punk fashion- When the Civil Rights Movement began to become more widespread, the beginning of the punk scene came with it. Inspired by social change and the push against normality, punks came up with their own style to separate themselves from everyone else. Characterized by leather, dark colors, and intense jewelry, punk fashion is one of the most curious styles out there, and my absolute favorite. Not only am I fascinated with the clothing style, I am also very drawn to the morals and beliefs that are behind being punk.

Art teacher, Mr. Mendenhall, reminisces on the excitement of sports in the 70s.

“I remember being a small kid laying on the floor of my parent’s den and watching the 1977 World Series. I saw Reggie Jackson belt 3 home runs in game 6 of the series to lead to the Yankees. I enjoyed it so much I bought a poster of him for my wall the very next day!” Mendenhall shares.

Ms. Driggers, our principal, was also a child of the era.

“[I remember] the music and dance. The bell bottoms returned several times over the decades.”

From Atari to ZZ Top, the 70s were jam-packed with nostalgic and revolutionary technology, ideas, music, and clothing. With tons of memorabilia and the continuous popularity of the time, the 70s leaves its population with great memories and times they’ll never forget.
