Has “Cancel Culture” gone too far? With the term becoming more popular and used since the start of Covid, it has impacted so many people’s lives in both negative and positive ways. While it is still a relatively new subject, cancel culture is when one makes a controversial opinion or comment about someone, and they quickly go from being a well-loved influencer to someone who may be extremely hated by most people.

Typically when canceled, they are either Tik Tokers or Instagram influencers. There have been some major celebrities who have been canceled, such as Matt Damon, J.K. Rowling, Ellen Degeneres and James Cordon.

While the canceling happens, it typically will be by fans or followers of those influencers. While they may be canceled by fans, some people will still strongly support them, which tends to cause drama among fans.

Shaila Romero, a senior, says, “I believe that it has both negative and positive aspects. While it’s good that we are taking away platforms from people with possible bad morals. I also think it’s unfair to bring things up that should be left in the past.”

Some people think that cancel culture is something that is truly helping the internet and making positive impacts. However, some people believe that cancel culture has gone too far and is affecting way too many people in negative ways.

Haley Denton, a sophomore, claims, “I feel like cancel culture should be eliminated because people are getting canceled over the littlest things. If I were a celebrity I would get canceled in the first day.”

While cancel culture did only start getting more popular after Covid, these instances have been happening for decades. It has impacted not only influencers and celebrities but also impacted the way social media will be used for the rest of time.
