Souring Into Disc Golf

Souring+Into+Disc+Golf

It’s no secret that Carolina Forest High School is one of the biggest schools in Horry County. There are so many different clubs and sports that CFHS offers; something can be found for everyone. One club that the campus has to offer is a Disc Golf Club.

Disc golf is the practice of throwing a disc into a standing basket that depends on the length of the hole the players are aiming for. The players must complete an 18 hole course, mainly in the woods, taken from the sport of golf. There are courses welcomed to players and their “card” (the group of members that you play with), which span all the way from Loris to Socastee.

On Thursdays after school from 3:45 to 4:45, the Disc Golf Club practices outside of F House with their coaches.

Teachers Greg Williams, Paul Sapp, and Bradley Fecteau help their team learn the ropes of the sport.

Williams shared that over the years, teachers on campus started playing the sport together, and they decided to “share the enjoyment of the sport” with the students here at CFHS, too.

The club is completely open to whoever is interested in playing. Not only will the coaches provide their knowledge but also disc sets if the interested playing doesn’t have one of their own.

Sapp selflessly admitted that he chose to sponsor the club because of his personal enjoyment with the club but revealed that it’s also to help the students push themselves to try new things and “get out there.”

“It is easy to start, easy to play, but can take a lifetime to master. In the meantime, though, the students can enjoy the sport at their own pace and leisure,” Sapp explained.

The sport is a mixture of golf and frisbee, which are both calmer and no contact activities, but they still have that competitive aspect to it.

Williams added, “One of the best parts of the sport is that you are only competing against yourself and the course.”

Player and junior at CFHS Mauricio Rojas claims that the sport is both “fun and an engaging activity” for him.

Not only is the club a great way to be apart of the huge community at Carolina Forest, but the sport itself has allowed its members to create a positive outlet for those who might want a calmer activity rather than the typical contact sport.
