Sneaker Trends

Sneaker Culture
Sneaker+Trends

The rise of sneaker culture has been a topic of discussion amongst sports enthusiasts, fashionistas and collectors alike. The prices of sneakers have increased dramatically over the years, with some rare pairs being sold for thousands of dollars on the resale market. This trend has been driven by the growing interest in sneaker collecting and the limited production of many sneakers.

National Geographic reports that sneaker culture originated in the early 1980s when footwear brands started collaborating with athletes. However, it really gained traction in the 1990s, thanks to hip hop culture and Nike’s Air Jordan line, which became a symbol of status among urban youth. Today, sneaker culture surpasses demographics and geography, influencing both fashion and sports on a global scale.

Sneaker culture has become a lifestyle for many with enthusiasts going to great lengths to acquire rare and limited editions sneakers. The value of sneakers isn’t always based on the materials or craftsmanship but rather on the nostalgia or iconic value certain sneakers hold. For example, the Nike SB Dunk Low Freddy Krueger, released in 2007, features the classic horror character’s colors and marks. These shoes were limited to only thirty pairs and prices can now fetch upwards of $30,000 on StockX, GOAT and other sneaker resale apps.

The sneaker industry has also capitalized on this by collaborating with companies, artists, athletes, and designers to create unique and highly sought after shoes. These limited releases create a sense of exclusivity amongst collectors, leading to increased value and demand. This culture has spread globally, with sneaker conventions and events drawing crowds of collectors and enthusiasts.

Richard Freire, a sophomore at Carolina Forest High School, said,”I think sneaker culture is more than just a trend, it’s a unique way of self-expression and a powerful tool for storytelling. From the most known Air Jordan line, to the rare limited edition collaborations, there’s something for everyone in the sneaker world.”

Junior Javion Barret added, “ I think sneaker culture is amazing, a great way to express your feelings and a very nice hobby to have. I think silhouettes like the Air Jordan 1 and Nike Dunk’s have had a huge impact on sneaker culture.”

The rise of sneaker culture has not been without controversies, with limited sneakers leading to long lines and even violence in some instances.  Sadly, an example of this was a fight in late October of 2022 that led to a deadly shooting in San Antonio  over some shoes. The resale market has also drawn criticism, with resellers driving up prices and making it difficult for many to attain certain shoes such as at the peak of Nike Dunks. Shoes such as the Air Jordan Off White 5 Muslin goes for around $500 to $700, and they retail for $220.

Overall, sneaker culture has evolved into a diverse part of the fashion and sports industry. The high demand for limited edition and exclusive shoes showcase the allure and passion that drives this culture.
